FALLAS 2014 – THE COLOURFUL FESTIVAL OF VALENCIA

Firecrackers, gunpowder, flowers, traditional costumes, party, music, satire, emotions are some of the ingredients that you will find in Valencia those days.

VOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAalencia celebrates each year the final days of winter and the arrival of spring with this spectacular festival of color and sound named “Fallas”. It takes place every year from March15 to 19 in homage to Our Lady of the Forsaken and Saint Joseph´s day, also bank holiday in Spain because it’s our Father´s day. The city offers to the visitor a festival of bonfires fireworks accompanied with a dosis of humor in the Fallas (monuments made by local artists).These incredible monuments that are exhibited on every junction all over the city are called the “ninots” that will be paraded on the streets. These sculptures satirises famous characters of the international society, politicians, singers, artists or characters of the history.

From  March 15-19 at 2PM firecrackers are taking prominence in Plaza Ayuntamiento in a noisy event called La Mascletá.

On 18th of March “The Night of Fire” is taking part, the most spectacular fireworks of Valencian Fallas. On 19th of March night, the “Cremá”, all the Fallas are almost simultaneously burnt all over One of the most important highlight of the festival is the Ofrenda de Flores a la Virgen de los Desamparados, a beautiful ceremony every March 17 and 18, that honours our Patron Saint, La Virgen de los Desamparados. Thousands of Falleras and Falleros arrive to the city from every corner of Valencia. They wear  traditional costumes and are accompanied by their brass music bands to offer bouquets of flowers to the giant image of the Virgin.

falla 14On 18th of March “The Night of Fire” is taking part, the most spectacular fireworks of Valencian Fallas. On 19th of March night, the “Cremá”, all the Fallas are almost simultaneously burnt all over the city.

In addition of the official acts, the city has a ver special atmosphere, fiestas in every district, artistic illumination, concerts, Fallas contest to determin which is the best figurine, creativity and work. In these days Valencia is in its glory, new vibes and energy come with with fire and it begins from the start again … Enjoy them!!!

6pm. Closing ceremony of the Ninot Exhibition.

12pm. Setting up (la Planta) of all the Fallas.

1:30am. Fireworks display (Paseo de la Alameda).

Sunday 16 March

4:30pm. Children’s Fallas Award Ceremony.

10:30pm. Cabalgata Folclórica (procession with examples of regional festivals).

Monday 17th  March

9:30am. Fallas Award Ceremony.

16:00pm. Floral offering to Virgen de los Desamparados (Our Lady of the Forsaken).

Tuesday 18th  March

11am.Tribute to the poet Maximiliano Thous (Calle Sagunto).

12pm. Tribute to Maestro Serrano (Avenida Reino de Valencia).

2pm. Mascleta (Plaza del Ayuntamiento).

16pm. Floral offering to Virgen de los Desamparados (Our Lady of the Forsaken).

Wednesday 19th  March

11am. Floral offering to St. Joseph (St. Joseph Bridge).

12pm. Solemn Mass to honour St Joseph the Patriarch (The Cathedral).

2pm. Mascleta (Plaza del Ayuntamiento).

19pm. Procession of Fire (from Calle Ruzafa, Calle Colon, to end in Porta de la Mar).

22pm. Crema (Burning) of the children’s Fallas.

22:30pm. Crema (Burning) of the children’s Falla awarded first prize in the Special Section.

23pm. Crema (Burning) of the Plaza del Ayuntamiento children’s Falla.
