Wine Bus Vegalfaro Winery & the Requena Caves

On 25th August we took the Wine Bus to Requena, a tour that included a visit to Vegalfaro Winery, the Requena Caves and the medieval market in the old town ending with a fantastic lunch in the Cubillos Restaurant.

Vegalfaro winery offers you the professionalism and the hospitality of its owner, Rodolfo Valiente, who guided us through the vineyards and the winery. On this occasion he told us that August is one of the most beautiful months to discover the vineyard because the grapes are cluste in a splendorous time of its growth, ripening and changing colour.  At the time of our visit the white varieties were already being harvested.

Vegalfaro is well known for its famous wine, Pago de los Balagueses, this category of wines represents very special wine,in which the character of the terroir is directly reflected in the wine, this is what distinguishes it. Apart of this wine the winery has another highlight, which is the “Cava” (Sparkling wine). The cava is produced with the white grape varieties Macabeo and Chardonnay, it´s brut nature (no sugar added) and aged in French oak barrels. It spends thirty months in the bottle for the second fermentation and is elaborated in an artisan way. During the tasting everybody was impressed, starting with the Cava, white wines and red wines. Certainly it is very difficult to decide which one was the best because in Vegalfaro winery all the products are superb.

Next the Wine Bus took us to the Caves of Requena, a museum of underneath caves located in the heart of the Villa. There we enjoyed a great guided tour, a labyrinth of connected caves like a huge Gruyere cheese under Old Town of Requena. Accidentally that same Saturday there was a great medieval market in Requena where we had the opportunity to stroll around and buy artisan products.

Finally, if we mention Requena we cannot forget about a singular place like the Cubillos Restaurant, located in front of the Islamic defensive tower of the citadel. When we stepped into the restaurant we found out that there, inside a cave, we had our table full of nice gastronomy samples of the town, sausages such as chorizo, morcilla and longaniza accompanied with bread and “ajo arriero” along other traditional delicatessen. Nobody was left hungry that day as the dishes were  filling!
