An enticing labyrinth of streets will nudge our tour towards the top of the mountain with its crowning castle commanding fantastic views. The road up to the ramparts is full of surprises: gothic arches, porches, noble houses bearing coats-of-arms… all indicating that the place is steeped in history. Morella has been disputed in many wars and battles, but apart from its warfare history it was one of the most important trading centres in the whole region. In the 13th Century, the wise conqueror of Valencia, King Jaime I of Aragon, granted the royal charter that exempted traders from paying taxes on certain transactions.
